Tragic Drowning of Ada Senior High School Students in the Volta River
Tragic incidents do happen. However, the way and manner in which it occurs makes it distressing. On November 5, 2023, a heart breaking incident occurred in the Ada Senior High School, in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana, where two students, yet to be identified lost their lives due to drowning in the Volta River after escaping from the boarding house without proper authorization.
Ada Senior High School is a renowned educational institution noted for providing quality education to students for over six decades. The school is known for its strict adherence to rules and regulations including restrictions on students leaving the boarding house without obtaining an “exeat.”
In the morning of November 5th, the two students, who are yet to be identified but believed to be around the ages of 16 to 18, made an unauthorized departure from the school premises. Their intention was to swim in the nearby Volta River, which is well-known for its strong currents and potential dangers.
The two managed to evade the supervision of the boarding house staff and quietly left the boarding house. They walk to the river, approximately a kilometre from the school, and ventured into the river. Tragically, both students encountered difficulties in the water, and despite their efforts, they were unable to stay afloat.
Residents around the river upon seeing the tragic incident mounted a search operation immediately. Regrettably, in the afternoon of November 5, 2023, the bodies of the two students were recovered from the river.
The bodies, after been retrieved from the river were given to the Ada Police Division Unit for autopsy and preservation at the District Government Hospital.
This heart-wrenching incident underscores the critical importance of maintaining and enforcing strict rules and regulations within educational institutions, particularly those related to students safety.
